Some outlets for writers - industry terminology

Traditional printed books - the main sectors

General books - called 'trade' in the business. These cover fiction and non-fiction titles.
Children's - they used to sell to parents but now kids themselves are a sizeable market.
Academic - turn your lecture notes into a book.
Educational - low cost and large distribution.
Professional - often high cost, books needed for work purposes.
Special interest - often employed within the industry in a slightly derogatory way and indicates the limited audience (just like most books). the web provides a way to market worldwide. An excellent candidate for self-publishing as  the market can be identified.
Commemorative, promotional - great if you know your niche.
