A bit of history (and a prediction)

The evolution of the ebook could be traced to Adobe's PDF reader. This format that has bee with us for 20 years enabled documents that were produced by an array of different software to produce documents that could be read on almost every platform (ie every type of computer).
For a decade the hardware and software evolved.
Amazon bought the French company, Mobitext, and adopted the e-ink screen to produce a device that used very little power, at a time when battery power was very limited (and expensive). The Kindle was the outcome.
An open system called ePub evolved in parallel with developments in hardware and software. During 2010/2011 the industry cooperated in an unprecedented way to refine ePub and published the specification of ePub3 in June 2011.
2012 will be the year of convergence when hardware, software, global communications and content will combine to make the ebook the prime format for publications. More
